Social Security, And Your Polymyositis Medical File

Polymyositis is a disability case Social Security rarely evaluates compared to other conditions. Polymyositis is an uncommon autoimmune disease that attacks its own muscles and related tissues. It usually affects upper body muscles and can affect the internal organs, but it can also affect the lower body muscles. Symptoms include the following:

1. Muscle weakness,
2. Muscle loss,
3. Pain,
4. Stiffness,
5. Shortness of breath,
6. Fatigue, and
7. Weight loss.

Social Security's assessment of the severity of your polymyositis is based on your diagnostic testing, your ongoing treatment, and your symptoms. Polymyositis is diagnosed with a muscle biopsy, EMG, and blood tests. Treatment is unfortunately limited to corticosteroids such as prednisone for inflammation and pain medications. There is no known cause or cure. Physical therapy is usually ineffective.

An adult meets the Adult Listing 14.05 if they prove points 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. A child meets the Child Listing 114.05 if they prove points 1, 2, 3, or 4.

1. Pelvis or shoulder weakness causing walking or manipulative limitations,
2. Muscle weakness causing problematic swallowing,
3. Muscle weakness causing difficulty breathing,
4. Calcinosis (the accumulation of calcium crystals in your skin) causing reduced joint or intestinal movement, or
5. Severe symptoms that limit your day-to-day life.
